Our Story

How Heronwood came to be

Heronwood began with a straightforward observation. Many families in Chiang Mai — expatriate households, long-settled residents, Thai families with relatives abroad — found that their important documents were scattered, unlabelled, or simply difficult to locate in a moment of need. And yet sitting down to address it always felt like it required more energy than anyone could easily find.

The service was built to solve that in a particular way: not by adding complexity, but by removing it. Rather than presenting families with a stack of forms or a complicated methodology, Heronwood offers a calm, structured conversation. We move at the pace the household sets, ask clear questions, and help people translate what they have into something their family can follow.

We are not solicitors, financial advisers, or healthcare professionals. What we offer is careful, organised attention — the kind that helps a household feel settled rather than pressured. Every programme ends with something printed and tangible, because we believe the value of this work lies in what people can hold in their hands.

The name Heronwood came from a particular quality the founders wanted to bring to the work: stillness and steadiness, even when the subject matter carries weight. A heron stands at the water's edge without urgency. That quality — attentive, unhurried, clear-eyed — is what we aim to bring to every session.

We work from our Chiang Mai office on Singharat Road, in the Si Phum neighbourhood of the old city. Sessions take place here, or for longer programmes, sometimes in the household itself where documents are kept. We serve individuals, couples, and families across the Chiang Mai region.

Our work is organisational and educational only. We hold ourselves to a clear boundary: we help people understand what they have and how to present it, and we always point them toward official professional resources when matters require formal expertise.

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Clear scope of service

We never drift into legal, financial, or formal advisory territory. Our boundaries are clearly stated at the start of every programme, and we maintain them consistently.

Careful handling of information

Personal and household details shared in sessions are treated with discretion. We do not retain unnecessary copies of documents and we handle all data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Printed deliverables, always

Every programme produces printed materials that the client takes away. We believe that the practical value of this work lives in something tangible — not in a shared folder or an email attachment.

Referrals to official sources

When a client's situation involves matters that require professional expertise, we signpost them clearly toward the relevant organisations and authorities. We never discourage seeking proper professional help.

Unhurried and client-led

Sessions do not follow a fixed clock. We move at the pace the client sets, and we never push families to address more in one meeting than they are comfortable with.

Bilingual support available

Sessions can be conducted in English or Thai, and our printed guides are prepared in the language that works best for the household. We serve both expatriate and Thai families across the Chiang Mai region.

Our values and the work we do

Heronwood sits at a particular point in a household's journey — the moment when someone decides it is time to bring their records into a form that others can follow. That decision is rarely urgent in the way a medical appointment is urgent. But the people who make it usually know, quietly, that it has been waiting to be made.

Our approach to estate records organisation draws on straightforward principles: careful listening, plain writing, and the patience to work through things at the right pace. We serve individuals thinking about their own household and families working together, as well as people supporting an older relative who wants their affairs better organised.

Northern Thailand presents particular considerations that national or international services may not fully address — questions of local property records, the presence of documents in both Thai and English, the involvement of relatives in different countries, and the different ways families here prefer to work through sensitive subjects. These are things we understand from experience, not from reading about them.

Every programme we offer ends with something a family member can pick up and follow without needing to ask questions. That is the test we apply to all our printed materials: could someone unfamiliar with the household use this to find what they need, in the right order, without confusion? If the answer is not clearly yes, we keep working.
